timbre-poste ([postage] stamp)

For many years, the stamp itself was held to be of little real value in performing postal service.
It was only as of 1 January 1849 that the stamp came into active general use in France. The postage stamp had been used in England since 6 May 1840.
Because of the heightened efficiency it brought to the exchange of mail in France and England, the stamp remained one of the main factors in the development and expansion of the Post Office.
