recette auxiliaire [urbaine ou rurale] (auxiliary office / sub-station urban or rural)

This type of establishment was reactivated in 1895, based on the German and English models. Attached to a municipality and supervised by a non-administrative manager, this type of "mini-post office" offered minimal postal services (for example, issuing and paying on money orders and postal coupons, registered letters). An auxiliary office was controlled by a full service post office.

recette composée (compound receivership)

A new title enforced in 1864, designating the same arrangement as a compound post office.

recette simple (simple receivership)

A new title, also enforced in 1864, designating the same arrangement as a simple post office. This category was divided into four classes, the last of which included distribution that was dropped at the same time.

receveur, receveuse (postmaster, postmistress)

The person responsible for all aspects of the administration of a post office. Before 1864, this person was called the "directeur des Postes" (the post office director).
